SJCT Takes Audience to the County Fair!
A new, original production by the San Juan Community Theatre, will take audiences to the San Juan County Fair for four performances in July. The play, entitled All’s Fair, offers a colorful and intriguing collection of stories that take place against the backdrop of the annual Fair, all written by local playwrights.
“Being a community theatre, we are anxious to get local material that connects to the community on our stage, and when Stan Matthews came to me with this proposal I thought, ‘Perfect!’” said Nathan Kessler Jeffrey, the Theatre’s Executive Artistic Director.
The Fair presents an ideal setting for local stories because it is a unique meeting place where people of all ages, means, and political persuasions gather from throughout the county to enter contests, show off everything from homemade beer, handmade quilts and cookies to poetry, antique tractors, bunny rabbits, cows and horse-riding skills, and to celebrate the things that make the San Juan Islands unique.
“This play isn’t really about the Fair itself, it’s about people and the events that happen in this unique setting,” Matthews said.
The stories in All’s Fair weave comedy, romance, politics, family, tourism and a bit of mischief together into a show that reflects the values and the irascible, loving and generous people who embrace life on the San Juan Islands.
In creating this show, local writers Stan Matthews, Susan Reed, Reve Shannon and Duncan Wilson spent time swapping stories with County Fair Manager Jennifer Allen and others and all have personal connections to the Fair. Reve Shannon is, himself, a former manager of the County Fair, as well as being a writer and performer. Duncan Wilson was captain of the Town of Friday Harbor’s two-time champion “Fair Feud” team. Susan Reed judged writing and managed the Fair’s writer’s booth for two years, and Stan Matthews has won blue ribbons at the Fair for his writing before becoming a writing judge. (Stan’s wife Susan has a drawer full of blue ribbons and a couple of “Best in Shows” for her baking.)
All’s Fair will run July 9-12, 2020 at San Juan Community Theatre.
