This September, the third year of Up Close performances will go up in the Gubelman Rooom at San Juan Community Theatre.  Up Close is a collaborative project that enlists local songwriters, poets, and playwrights to write original music, poetry, and monologues with Island elders.  The project is a means of creating more intergenerational connections and more connection in general, in our Island community.  Up Close connects audiences with deeply personal, and universal, stories of love, laughter, and loss.
Grisha Krivchenia started Up Close in 2016, modeling the program on Lifesongs, a similar initiative that hired him to write original music with hospice patients in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  Grisha and Bobby Ryan mounted the first production in three shows at the Gubelman Room in September 2017.  Those shows sold out, and Up Close has become a yearly event at SJCT.
In 2019, the September Up Close concert will feature more new songs and poetry, including new works that were composed on Lopez and Orcas.  At this stage, the works are in-progress, so we are eager to enlist new collaborators.  If you have an interest in making original poetry and music and/or working closely with island elders, please do not hesitate to email: This email address is being protected from spambots.
