Every time the lights go up on stage, a costume brings a character to life, a visiting musician wows an audience...those are the examples of how contributions to SJCT help make the magic happen. And there are many ways you can provide that financial support.

Maybe you or someone you know would really like to see a certain jazz band perform on the Whittier? How about a pianist or a dance troupe? Through underwriting, we can help you make that happen. By investing in a particular group or event, an underwriter helps offset the price of those tickets so that more islanders can attend and experience the high quality arts that we so cherish on this island. A couple of friends could also get together to underwrite something they really want to see here.
Consider naming the Theatre as a beneficiary in your will. We encourage you to contact your financial advisor to learn more about the variety of approaches available (including charitable gift annuities), providing donors the special satisfaction of knowing the lasting benefit they've created. Many San Juan Community Theatre members and patrons choose to remember a loved one with the uniquely enduring tribute of a bequest to the performing arts. This is a very personal memorial and one that recalls the lives of those who have gone before us in a positive gift that we accept with special thanks. Names of those recognized appear in Arts Notes and the bequest itself will support any program you choose if you prefer a specific Theatre program to a general gift.
If your current or former employer has a matching gift program, you may be able to increase (and even double) your contribution to the Theatre. Pick up a Matching Gift Form from your employer’s human resources department, and send the completed form along with your gift to: San Juan Community Theatre, P.O. Box 1063, Friday Harbor, WA 98250.
You can make your annual giving donation in quarterly, semi-annual or monthly payments ($5.00 minimum per payment please) charged to your credit card if you like. Contribution Policies

Policies Regarding the Gift of Assets to the San Juan Community Theatre

The following apply to all contributions:

  1. All contributions to San Juan Community Theatre (SJCT) become the sole property of SJCT. SJCT is a qualified 501(c)(3) organization (Tax ID: 91-1277452). Accordingly, all contributions to SJCT are treated for tax purposes as gifts to a Section 501(c)(3) organization and are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law, subject to individual and corporate limitations.
  2. Contributions of assets other than cash, cash equivalents, and publicly traded stocks may need to be reviewed by the Development Committee before acceptance. This includes gifts of tangible property, real estate, etc. Acceptance of gifts of tangible items for use by SJCT’s Production Department are at the sole discretion of SJCT’s department supervisors.
  3. Contributions to designated funds other than pre-existing designated funds may need to be reviewed by the Development Committee before acceptance. Permanent designated funds include SJCT’s Endowment, Production Underwriting, and Education. For questions on current funds, please contact the SJCT administrative offices.
  4. SJCT policy requires that all contributions be converted to cash as soon as is practicable using prudent fiscal judgement. The length of time may vary considerably based on the type of asset.
  5. Valuation for IRS tax purposes: Securities are valued based upon the fundamental concept of change of control. For securities this means that the variation is the average of the high and low prices on the day that your broker issues the transfer and is confirmed by SJCT’s fiduciary agent (not the date that you request a transfer from your broker). For stocks that are mailed this is the date that a fully executed stock power is mailed and postmarked or for those delivered by hand, the date on the written receipt.
  6. Valuation of other assets: Non-publicly traded securities, real estate and real property may incur significant delays before sale and conversion to cash. The IRS value would be fair market value at the date of transfer of ownership. It is critical that the donor contact SJCT’s Engagement office prior to initiating the contribution of these types of assets.
  7. Planned Giving: Undesignated planned gifts received by SJCT are board-designated: 90% of the funds will be designated to the George & Sidney Thorson Endowment Fund (SJCT's Endowment Fund) and 10% will be designated towards general operations for the current fiscal year (not to exceed $15,000 for a single gift).
