For every play and performance at SJCT, there is a multitude of talents you never see on stage. Talented volunteers who have worked “behind the scenes” or in “the front of house” to make the action on stage a reality.

BACK OF HOUSE ROLES
Stage Manager:
Attends all rehearsals and production meetings, and acts as administrative assistant to the Director. Facilitates the technical end of the production. Requires a large time commitment and prior experience.
Assistant Stage Manager:
Assists the Stage Manager and works on Running Crew during production. Some experience and large time commitment required.
Running Crew:
Works the entire production performing varied duties. Attends tech week (the final rehearsals) in order to “learn” the show and is expected to work each performance. Duties range from supporting actors back stage to moving props on stage to curtain work.
Props and Stage Dressing
- Design
Collects all props needed from various sources, builds/makes props and assures props are returned to rightful owners after production. - Support
Assists in attaining, building and fixing all props.
Hair and Make-up
- Design
Assists actors in preparing for each performance as directed by the costume designer. Attends dress rehearsals and is expected to assist at each performance of the production.
Sets
- Design
Works with the director to create a “world” for the production and will create drawings/models of the design for the Technical Director to engineer set designs. - Construction
Works with Technical Director to build sets. All levels of experience are welcome. Time commitment varies. - Painting
Paints completed set. All levels of experience are welcome.
Lighting (Training Available)
Design
Very skilled technical position that is supervised by the Technical Director.
Light Board Operator
No prior experience necessary. Attends tech week (the last week of rehearsals) and is expected to work the light board each performance of the production.
Light Effects
May include running a spotlight up in the catcwalk, or projections
Sound (Training Available)
Design
Very skilled technical position that is supervised by the Technical Director.
Sound Board Operator
No prior experience necessary. Attends tech week (the last week of rehearsals) and is expected to work the sound board each performance of the production.
Costumes
Design
Works with the Director to create costumes. Pulls costumes from different sources, designs and sews individual pieces when needed. Time commitment will vary depending on costume requirements.
Support
Assists Costume Designer in finding, sewing, ironing modifying, fitting, and maintaining costumes.
Dresser
Prepares costumes and assists actors in costume changes during a performance. Attends dress rehearsals and is expected to assist at each performance of the production.
FRONT OF HOUSE ROLES
All front of house volunteers are required to report to the House Manager one hour prior to the performance, and are asked to remain after the performance to assist in clean-up.
Performance House Manager:
Ensures that patrons have a good experience at the performance by overseeing all volunteers and all theatre functions except those relating to the stage production itself. Communicates with the backstage crew regarding show start time and intermission length. Must be willing to jump in and help any position, requiring a cool head under pressure and training in our ticketing computer system. *This position may receive compensation.
Performance Ticket Manager/Daily Box Office Sales:
Responsible for ticket sales either before a show or during our daily box office hours.
Usher
Before performances begin, distributes programs and directs patrons to their seats. At intermission assumes position at the doors to answer questions. After the show collects programs and assists with clean-up.
Host/Hostess
May sell food and drinks before and during intermission, take tickets before the performance, or provide patrons with their pre-paid tickets. During intermission assists in concessions and after the show helps with clean-up.
